Identify the material being approved
A material name alone is not a production specification. Ask for the material reference, supplier swatch code where available, colour reference, thickness or fabric weight where relevant, backing and coating. Record which side is the face and which components use the material.
Compare colour under agreed lighting
Screen images cannot approve production colour. Review the physical swatch under consistent lighting and retain a labelled reference. For a clear PVC pouch, compare clarity and tint alongside the proposed trim; for terry or velvet, review the surface in more than one direction.
Check the material in its intended construction
A flat swatch does not show how material behaves at a seam, folded edge or curved panel. Review a sewn or assembled trial where appropriate. Check whether the chosen backing, lining and reinforcement create the intended shape without unwanted stiffness or creasing.
Separate appearance approval from performance requirements
If cleaning, colour transfer, abrasion or destination-market material requirements matter, specify the required check and acceptance basis before production. A wipe-clean surface does not establish that the finished bag is waterproof. Request project-relevant documentation rather than assuming certification from appearance.
Keep one controlled approval record
Label the retained swatch and record the approved material combination, date and revisions. Confirm it on the complete sample using the sample approval checklist.
