CUSTOM BAG BUYER GUIDE

Why Does a Custom Bag Sample Cost More Than the Bulk Unit Price?

Understand what a custom bag sample price covers, which costs may be separate, and how buyers can compare prototype quotations before bulk production.

QUICK ANSWER

A custom bag sample usually costs more per piece because it includes one-off pattern development, small-quantity material preparation, individual logo setup, manual construction and revision risk. The bulk unit price is lower because these development and setup costs are spread across the production quantity.

RFQ CHECKLIST

Send these details for an accurate sample quotation.

  • Reference image, sketch or tech pack with approximate dimensions.
  • Intended contents, use case and any load or protection requirement.
  • Material, colour, lining, hardware and logo direction.
  • Expected bulk quantity, colour split, destination and required timing.
  • Clarification of sample fee, tooling, revisions, freight and refund terms.

A sample price is a development cost, not a miniature bulk price

A physical prototype is made to test whether the brief can become a workable product. The factory may need to study the reference, draft or adjust a pattern, confirm construction order and solve details that have not yet been defined. These one-off tasks remain necessary even when only one sample is produced.

Small material quantities cost more to prepare

Bulk production uses planned material quantities and repeat cutting. A sample may require one roll, one sheet, one zipper colour, special hardware or a short logo run that cannot be purchased at the eventual bulk unit rate. If an exact custom material is unavailable for one prototype, ask whether a close substitute will be used for construction testing.

Pattern making and construction testing are part of the quotation

A reference image does not show every seam, reinforcement, lining method or internal measurement. Structured vanity cases, backpacks, travel bags and protective cases can require more pattern work than a simple flat pouch. Share dimensions, intended contents and functional requirements so the supplier can quote the correct development route.

Logo setup and tooling may be separate

Screen-print plates, embroidery files, embossing dies, metal logo moulds and custom zipper-puller tooling are different cost items. Ask whether the sample quotation includes logo setup, whether tooling can be reused for bulk production and whether a revised logo position requires another setup charge.

Courier cost is not the sample-making cost

International express delivery can equal or exceed the factory sample fee, especially for a structured or large bag. Compare quotations only after separating product development, logo or tooling charges and courier freight. Confirm the destination postal code and whether duties or taxes are excluded.

How to compare two sample quotations fairly

Check whether both suppliers are quoting the same material, dimensions, compartments, logo method, packaging, number of revisions and shipping scope. A lower figure may exclude pattern work, tooling, freight or a functional feature. Use the custom bag quotation comparison guide before choosing a supplier.

What to send for a reliable prototype quotation

Send a reference image or tech pack, approximate dimensions, intended contents, material direction, logo artwork, target quantity, destination and required timing. Changrong reviews the brief before confirming feasibility, sample scope and lead time. See the custom bag development process and quality-control approach before requesting a sample.
